Most people underestimate the time it takes to put together social media marketing content.
If it’s as simple as writing up something quickly then uploading it to a social media app from your smartphone, you’re doing something wrong and the lack of leads you’re getting from it likely reflect that. Social media marketing requires a lot of skill within large, medium, and small business marketing strategy and creative. The job of a social media marketer does not end with post creation and deployment. A key ingredient to a social media strategy that converts is social media promotion. Follow these tips for getting more shares from your social media marketing efforts. These first two should especially be part of a small business marketing strategy – they are free to utilize.
1. Use social media share tools.
Tools like Viral Content Buzz and Just Retweet can be used without paying a cent. They connect you with a wider audience that shares your content. A lot of times, the people sharing your content already have an established social media presence, which means even greater reach for your content.

2. Listen and engage.
Sometimes getting shares for your social media marketing is as simple listening to what people are talking about on various channels and what they need, then engaging accordingly. For example:
- Let’s say you wrote an article on how to be productive at work.
- Through using Twitter Advanced Search you found that XYZ user also wrote an article on the same topic and shared it on his account.
- You then share XYZ user’s post first (give before you ask for something in return). You later engage the user and say hey, I noticed you wrote and shared an article on the same topic I recently wrote an article about, would you mind RTing my article? We’ve tried this strategy and 9 times out of 10 it works!
You could also use this same strategy on other social media channels. It tends to be a little harder on Facebook since personal pages are private but it is possible. What’s great about this strategy is that it also helps you build relationships with other users who have similar interests. Strengthen that relationship with them moving forward – each relationship could turn into a partnership of sharing each other’s content.
3. Utilize social media advertising.
The first two options we discussed were free (with the exception of how much your time coss). This next way to get shares for your social media marketing requires a small budget. Oftentimes for as little as $5 a day you could run a Facebook Promoted Post, Twitter Promoted Campaign, or Linkedin Sponsored Story – guaranteed to get your social media marketing more reach. If your content is good enough, it will naturally get more shares.
Be sure to include calls to action in your content that notes “Share this post,” or “Like what you see? Click to share.”
